Dotty’s Story 💚

Dotty the donkey came to us at just four years old, nearly completely blind.
Navigating a new environment was frightening and disorientating for her, and without intervention, her quality of life would have remained limited.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we were able to raise £2,000 in donations towards specialist cataract surgery — a procedure that had never before been performed on a donkey by Optivet.
We self-funded the remaining £5,000, making the treatment possible in full.

One eye was successfully restored, giving Dotty full vision on one side. The change was immediate and life-enhancing.

She can now move confidently around the farm, play freely with her friends, and fully engage with the world around her. Even more incredibly, Dotty later surprised us by giving birth to a beautiful baby donkey — whom she raised calmly and confidently, without issue. She is a devoted, capable mother.

Throughout her treatment, Dotty was an exceptional patient. She accepted daily eye drops, regular examinations, and close handling with gentleness and trust. Today, she is one of the most affectionate, cuddly souls on the farm.

Dotty is a living example of what compassion, community support, and commitment can achieve.
